The trip begins at Big Sandy Trail Head then up to Big Sandy Lake, over Jackass Pass and down into Cirque of Towers. Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area and Grayson Highlands State Park. Starting at Virginia State Route 603, I take the Appalachian Trail to Old Orchard Trail to Lewis Fork Trail to Cliffside Trail and then up to Pine Mountain Trail. Next I continue on Pine Mountain Trail to Rhododendron Gap and from there take the AT for about 0.2 mile to a campsite between the AT and the Crest Trail. On day three I take Rhododendron Gap Trail to Wilson Ridge Trail and then over Wilson Ridge and back down to the AT. Continuing on the AT through Grayson Highlands State Park, I camp the third night on the north side of Wise Shelter in a meadow along Big Wilson Creek. On day four I take the AT a short distance to Wilson Creek Trail to the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail to Scales. The trip ends at North Carolina State Route 215 (elevation 5,100′).
